- Reduced Emissions – Trees remove carbon dioxide all on their own, but they can also reduce emissions caused by the production of electricity for things like air conditioning when planted strategically for shade, or emissions caused by using fossil fuels for heat when planted to shield from cold winds.
- Increased Storm Water Control – Trees have an incredible ability to absorb and retain water. As rainwater falls, much of it gets picked up by trees, preventing it from ending up in storm drains or flooding. On average, a mature tree in a city can absorb up to 1,000 gallons of rainfall every year that would otherwise need to be pumped and filtered, requiring additional energy.
- Noise Abatement – If strategically planted, plants can significantly reduce noise from busy streets, etc. Rough bark and thick, fleshy leaves are particularly effective at absorbing sound due to their dynamic surface area.
- Improved Health of Citizens – Spending time around trees and looking at trees reduces stress, lowers blood pressure and improves mood. Numerous studies show that both exercising in forests and simply sitting looking at trees reduce blood pressure as well as the stress-related hormones cortisol and adrenaline. Hospital patients have been shown to recover from surgery more quickly when their hospital room offered a view of trees.
- Increased Property Value – The value of a well landscaped home with mature healthy trees can be as much as 10% higher than a similar home with no or little landscaping.
